Project: Assessing Economic Impact of Gentrification, Policing & Incarceration on Neighborhoods
Faculty: Vanessa Massaro
DP&S liaison: Janine Glathar
Semester and Year: Summer 2015; Summer 2017
Professor Vanessa Massaro conducted research in Gray’s Ferry, an economically depressed and racially volatile neighborhood in south Philadelphia, together with three Bucknell undergraduates.
Massaro’s work continued in 2017 with an L&IT grant to explore connections between household costs of incarceration and gentrification through a city-wide household survey in minority neighborhoods in Philadelphia. In spring and summer, student Sarah Sulkowski worked with Professor Massaro to develop the survey and gather data in the Philadelphia neighborhoods. Back on campus Sulkowski began to enter the data and undertake analysis in ArcGIS.
