Course: Geology 301: Geophysics
Faculty: Rob Jacob
DP&S Liaison: Debra Cook-Balducci
Date: Fall 2014
Prof. Rob Jacob wanted to redesign his Geophysics course, which he has been teaching since 2008. Typically the class time was split into lectures to explain concepts, computer instruction, and class discussion. Applying the lecture concept to computations led to decreased class time for discussion. Professor Jacob created a collection of open-course materials to increase students’ literacy in computer programming that would allow more flexibility in class time. He created the foundation by using a combination of recorded lectures and online quizzing that students complete out of class, which allows for more meaningful class discussions.
