Data Management Workshop SP 2018

Dates: January 11-12, 2018
Time: 9:00am-12:00pm
Location: Digital Scholarship Center
Instructor: Todd Suomela, Digital Pedagogy Specialist

The importance of data to scholarly inquiry has become increasingly evident to researchers across all disciplines during the last two decades. The amount of data accessible through the internet has grown by leaps and bounds. At the same time, the amount of data within many disciplines, from astronomy to English literature, has grown exponentially. How should researchers cope with the data deluge?

Successful strategies for dealing with the growing amount of research data depend on collaboration between researchers, staff, and technologists. This workshop will introduce the data life cycle of planning, collecting, assuring, describing, preserving, discovering, integrating, and analyzing information that is shared by many disciplines at Bucknell University. In addition to providing guidance on personal and collaborative research data management, we will discuss the particular tools and services provided by L&IT to make the research process more efficient and effective for faculty and staff at Bucknell.

Thursday will be a general introduction to data management. Friday will focus on geospatial data management. Participants who attend both days will receive a $300 stipend.

This workshop is funded by the Mellon Digital Scholarship Grant and is open to tenured and tenure-track faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Data workshops will be offered this summer for a broader audience. Space is limited, apply soon. Contact Todd Suomela (todd.suomela@bucknell.edu) with questions.
